Dr. John Tyndall’s 19th-century sterilization method, known as Tyndallization, laid the foundation for modern postbiotics by using repeated heat cycles to inactivate microorganisms while preserving beneficial properties. Today, FloraSMART® tyndallized strains—supported by clinical research—leverage this process to deliver stable, scientifically validated benefits for gut health, immunity, skin, and mood.

In the 1870’s, the Irishman Dr. John Tyndall came up with a groundbreaking sterilization technique aimed at eradicating bacterial spores to prevent spoilage and affirm germ theory. Little did he know that his process known as Tyndallization —repeated cycles of heating (typically 100°C for 20-30 minutes) followed by incubation at lower temperatures (around 37°C for 24 hours, repeated 3 times)—would be explicitly cited in contemporary research as the preferred method for producing inactivated probiotics aka “postbiotics”, “tyndallized probiotics” or “ghost biotics.”
The 4 tyndallized strains under the FloraSMART® brand umbrella – 𝐿. 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑖 327 – 𝐿𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑖𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑖 𝐾71 – 𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠 𝐸𝐶-12 – 𝐵𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑚 𝐵𝑅-108 – are efficacious in large part because of Dr. Tyndall’s early work. Manufactured in Japan, each of the strains are supported by multiple published clinical trials with compelling research in the areas of gut health, skin health, mood and immunity.
